Total Motion has launched a ground-breaking drivers’ app which will ensure businesses are compliant with the law, as well as saving them money and keeping their drivers safe and on the road.
Its new app features a vehicle defect reporting system that can be formatted for use on cars, vans or HGVs, meaning drivers will no longer have to fill in forms or wait on the phone if they encounter a problem before starting their journey or while out on the road.
Drivers will also be able to report an accident and submit their mileage via the app.
Further benefits are available by using the app in combination with Total Motion’s telematics. Fleets will be able to reduce downtime by up to 50 per cent as repairs can be arranged en route via one of Total Motion’s network of service engineers or via a mobile repairer.
Simon Hill, managing director of the Leicester-based vehicle management company, said: “The launch of Total Motion’s drivers’ app has huge positive safety and compliance implications for our clients.
“The app gives us a permanent record of when and where a defect was reported – which means we can accurately track repairs and produce a full audit trail.
“Once the app has been has accessed and the fault reported, a member of our team will call the driver back within 30 minutes.
“And, because all the data is fed into our real-time live reporting system, it will be much easier to plan downtime for essential service users; speeding up repairs and saving our clients money.

The app also brings benefits for organisations that have a grey fleet element – vehicles which are used for business journeys but are not owned by the employer.
With numbers of grey fleet increasing, the app provides a simple way for employees to complete regular roadworthiness and/or safety checks with no need for forms or paper while at the same time offering a full audit trail.
Additionally, the app lets fleets set the frequency with which drivers need to complete the checks, i.e. daily, weekly or monthly. Clients can access live records via the dashboard and view detailed reports.
As part of their operating licence obligations and the Road Traffic Act 1988, fleet operators must ensure that their vehicles are maintained to a roadworthy standard, which includes making sure that drivers carry out daily walk around checks of their vehicles. These checks should cover the vehicle’s external condition, ensuring in particular that the lights, tyres, wheel fixings, bodywork, trailer coupling, load and ancillary are serviceable. Drivers must be able to report any defects that could prevent the safe operation of the vehicles.
Drivers may be prosecuted for defects found on the vehicles they drive if they are considered to be partly or wholly responsible for them. However it is the operator’s responsibility, under Section 6 of the DfT guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness, to have a system in place to quality monitor these checks.
