A 12-year-old girl from Leicestershire is using her hobby of baking cake to raise funds for Leicester cancer charity, Hope Against Cancer. In just one weekend alone Emma McCarron raised over £1,000 for Hope Against Cancer through her Just Giving page, with her combined total now over £1,600.
Emma has been inspired to fundraise by her father Michael’s battle with skin cancer. In 2012, Michael successfully had a cancerous mole removed and had lymph nodes removed during 2015 and 2016. Unfortunately, this year, the melanoma returned. As a result, Michael began clinical trials organised by Hope Against Cancer at the Leicester Royal Infirmary in April.
Baking is a hobby of Emma’s, and she is using that skill to help raise funds for Hope Against Cancer by selling delightful confectioneries to the public.
“I am challenging myself to bake and raise money for Hope Against Cancer because I want to support a local charity,” Emma says on her fundraising page. “I love to bake and what better way than to raise money for Hope selling my cakes. I also want to support my dad and raise money for this amazing charity to help beat this awful disease. Please support me in buying a cake to help fund these trials to help my dad and other cancer patients.”
In order for Hope Against Cancer to run its clinical trials, similar to the ones Michael is undertaking, the local cancer research charity relies heavily on fundraising activities like Emma’s. These trials, along with the research from the team of clinical nurses based at Leicester Royal Infirmary, aim to make Leicester a hub for cancer research and find the most effective treatments for future patients.
Hope Against Cancer Chief Executive, Nigel Rose, said: “Emma’s efforts and story have been nothing short of inspirational for us here at Hope and we’re incredibly honoured that she is using her baking skills to help raise funds towards our research for future cancer patients. Not only that but Emma’s positivity during what is an understandably difficult period for her whole family is just incredible! We’re so proud of Emma and wish her father Michael well during his clinical trials.”
Emma has great fundraising ambitions in mind for the future. She hopes to hold a go-karting event one day and host a curry evening, as well as continuing to sell her cakes. Donations can be made through Emma’s fundraising page: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/claire-mccarron
