Amateur golfers and football fans are being offered the chance to take to the greens with a group of ex-professional and international footballers at a golfing day that is being held in Leicestershire in September.

A number of well-known footballers – all of whom have swapped their football boots for golf shoes – will be at the event, which is taking place at Glen Gorse Golf Club in Oadby on Friday 22nd September. The day includes 18 holes of golf with the ex-professionals, plus a two-course dinner, entertainment and prize giving in the evening.

So far, 20 footballers have been confirmed for the Glen Gorse Footballers Golf Classic, including some famous names from the 1960s through to the last decade.  Ex-Leicester City players Steve Walsh, Muzzy Izzet, and Jim Melrose will be joined by ex-England internationals Lee Hendrie, Brian Stein, Roy Mcfarland and Russell Osman, as well as Eddie Gray, Kevin Davies, Dave Bassett and more.

The event is being organised by ex-Arsenal captain and QPR player Terry Mancini who also played for Ireland in the 1970s and by Stephen Benton, a member of Glen Gorse.

“We hatched the idea whilst playing in the Footballers Classic in La Manga in Spain last year,” Terry explains. “We’ve planned a fantastic day of golf at the Glen Gorse course which is always great to play on – with the added bonus of playing with some well-known football faces from the past to make it a really special event.

The day will begin with registration at 11am. A draw will then be made to allocate each of the footballers into different teams, before commencing the 18-hole challenge at 1pm. Once the round has been completed, teams will enjoy a two-course dinner with a compere then the prize giving and auction.

Golfers can enter a team of three to take part alongside the footballers for £375 per team. A portion of the proceeds from the event will go to the captain’s charity.

Terry adds: “This is an amazing opportunity for footballing fans to meet players that have brought them joy over the years,to share stories and to enjoy this excellent golf course with them. Because of the exclusivity of the event, there are limited spaces available.”
