Employees from Nottingham based CIE Group have raised £5000 for Maggie’s Cancer Centre in Nottingham, after two of its staff benefited from the incredible support offered by the charity.
In September 2017, the CIE Group team successfully cycled 500 miles across France in just three days as part of the Alsace challenge. This was the 10th time the company has taken on the challenge, but this year the charity they chose to support had a personal connection.
CIE Sales Director, Steve Collin explains:
“Two of our staff have unfortunately been diagnosed with cancer and have benefitted from the incredible support of Maggie’s. So for our 10th year of the cycle challenge, we wanted to raise even more money in order to support this charity, which we know first hand is doing some truly great work for our team and local community.”
It was Steve who initially suggested taking part in the challenge for Maggie’s, but it only took seconds for the whole CIE team to agree on the decision. It was obvious to everyone that it was the right thing to do.
The team made up of Andy Short – Head of Technical Support, Kevin Sherwood – Field Sales Director, Steve Collins – Group Sales Director, Brent Hill – Volt Stick Sales Manager and Martin Featherstone – CYP Commercial Director, wanted to put all their effort and resource forward to raise some extra money to support Maggie’s, and celebrate the 10th year of participating in the challenge.
When signing up to the challenge, teams must agree to give 50% of whatever they raise to the Challenge Adventure Charities’ nominated charities, which were Cancer Research UK and the British Heart Foundation. This meant that to raise £5000 for Maggie’s, the team had to raise an outstanding £10,000.
“The Alsace challenge is hard work.”, said Steve, “We always think on day two, what have we let ourselves in for, but at the end of day three, it’s great to know that we have finished, and we always want to do it again.”
Maggie’s Centres are cancer support centres based next to major hospitals. The design is important to all Maggie’s centres and each one is designed by an architect. The distinctive green building in Nottingham was designed by architect Piers Gough and has interiors by Nottingham-born Sir Paul Smith.
“Our founder felt that space has the power to heal and if patients can walk through the door and feel calm and welcoming then the building has done half the job already.” said Katie Martin, Maggie’s Nottingham Centre Manager.
“It costs around £500,000 a year to fund a centre. Here in Nottingham we have three cancer support specialists, a psychologist, a benefits advisor and three members of the fundraising team.”
The centres provide emotional, psychological, social and practical support to anyone affected by cancer. The centre in Nottingham sees between 60 and 100 people a day; annually over 15,000 people visit the centre.
“Fundraising is hugely important to us,” said Katie, “and we’re so grateful to CIE Group, a local company based in Nottingham, for recognising the support we give their colleagues. We are thrilled that CIE took on this phenomenal challenge and raised £5000 to help us continue to provide the high level of support that we do. Thank you guys!”
In previous years, the team at CIE have raised over £30,000 for other local charities including Derby Kids’ Camp and the Saving Lives Helipad Appeal for Queens Medical Centre.
