The brightly coloured figures were donated by workers at Lubrizol’s site in Hazelwood after mental health charity Derbyshire Mind sent out an appeal for help with its first-ever Gnome Roam, which takes place at Foremarke Preparatory School, near Repton, on July 16.
The Gnome Roam is aimed at young children, who will be invited to walk along a trail and spot the gnomes hiding among the trees and plants, as well as listen to stories and enjoy garden games, activities and refreshments. It is being held to entertain the families of runners taking part in the Brooksie’s Bash 10-mile trail race, which takes place at the school at the same time, also in aid of Derbyshire Mind, while there will also be a five-kilometre family-friendly Fun Run and Walk
Lubrizol has chosen Derbyshire Mind as its adopted charity for the next two years and it has donated money to help stage the race and the Gnome Roam, which has been organised as part of the charity’s Enjoying Derbyshire project, a scheme designed to encourage people to go out for a walk in order to boost their sense of wellbeing.
Claire Hollingshurst, a quality systems manager at Lubrizol, said: “Derbyshire Mind is a wonderful local charity and we are very pleased to help them in any way we can. “We managed to collect about half a dozen gnomes and our staff will be either be running in the race or volunteering on the day. We are looking forward to seeing the younger visitors enjoying the fresh air and spotting our gnomes out and about on the trail.”
Sinead Dalton, Derbyshire Mind’s corporate administrator, said: “We have put out a big appeal for donations of gnomes and we’re very grateful to staff at Lubrizol for helping us out, as well as providing financial support for the day itself. “We’ve never organised a Gnome Roam before and we’re very excited about it. It will give younger visitors something fun to do during the race alongside the games, stories and the fun run and walk.”
The cost of taking part in the Gnome Roam, which starts at 10.30am, is £2, although entry is free for Under-2s. For more details visit www.derbyshiremind.org.uk
